on his appointment and the experience he’ll bring…
As a player I’ve played at a pretty decent level over the years on both sides of the border. I started in to men’s football at West Kirby in the West Cheshire league, where I was then picked up by Cammell Lairds, who were at the time in the Evostick North which is the equivalent of the National League North. I then went on to play in the Cymru Alliance for Conwy; then for the last few years I have found home at Greenfield FC. After having a good season last season when we won the league but couldn’t get promoted due to criteria, I was asked to make the step up and go to Denbigh at the start of the season. The lads up at Denbigh were some of the best bunch of lads I have ever played with and loved my time there, but due to personal reasons I made my way back to Greenfield midway through this season.
I suppose the idea of coaching was something I always had in mind for when I hung up my boots, but the journey into coaching was sped up when I broke my leg playing in May 2021. The not playing and being on the side not involved, was a horrible feeling! So Greenfield under 7s at the time were looking for a coach and I jumped at the chance to give it a go and I’ve been doing them ever since (now under 9s).
When I saw Hawarden were looking for a manager for the under 19s, I jumped at the chance. After meeting up with AB (Andy Butler, first team manager) and Eddie (Eddie Barry, reserve team manager) and hearing what they wanted from me and what they told me about the club, I was sold!
on the squad since taking charge…
Since I’ve come on board, I couldn’t have asked anymore from the lads. The effort they have given me has been brilliant and the quality on show I must admit has taken me by surprise! They’ve taken everything we’ve been doing in training and put it in to action in the few games we’ve had!
on ambitions for the remainder of the season…
There is still a lot to play for; we are behind on league games, so it’s going to be a hectic next couple of months for the lads! Brickfield are front runners in the league and we still have to play them twice, so we are going to do our best to chase them down!
We’re also still in two cup competitions starting this Sunday in final against Saltney and another Semi-final against Rhossdu United, so sky is the limit for us and I want to push for the treble.
It will be a massive ask for us, but I know we have the quality and depth to go for the lot!
on Sundays Cup Final…
Sunday will be a tough game. We’ve not managed to beat Saltney in 90 minutes yet this season and they are the only team to take points off us in the league, although we did manage to get past them on penalties in the cup a few weeks back; we know we are in for a big battle against them! Aaron has his lads well drilled and they will fancy their chances.
I will make sure our lads are ready and prepared right for Sunday and I’m sure they will be wanting to bring the silverware back to the Gladstone!
finally…
I would like to give a shout to AB and Eddie for the support and backing they have given me so far. Also, a massive shout to Stuart and Lyn for the work they do behind the scenes for the club and myself since I have come on board!
